Miss Australia's new duds or dud?

The new national costume piece for the new Miss Australia has been shown to a private audience of 50.

The SMH wrote "This year organisers opted to play it safe, calling on the sleek - and commercially savvy - designer Jayson Brunsdon - to create the costume for the 2008 Australian contestant, Laura Dundovic, to be worn at the finals in Vietnam on July 14."

Brunsdon has said the dress represents the great barrier reef colours and depth layers. A lot of people don't like it and even though i won't be whipping out the Bernina and making myself a copy for the Glebe markets i think it is a marked improvement on the street directory dress on Jen Hawkins and the Bondi Lifesaver costume of last year. Furthermore it is more fashion orientated and better fitting with modern Australia. More than can be said for other contestants national costumes, most of which are strange wearable versions of national icons and mardi gras inspired drag costumes with live national animals glue gunned to the shoulders.
Would we rather this?

What do you think of the gown?
